Square Enix is busy remaking Final Fantasy 7 while getting FF16 out the door, and there are even rumours that an FF9 remake is in the works. Basically, there's a whole lot of Final Fantasy coming our way, but SE staff have their sights set on even more--according to vice president and executive officer Yoshinori Kitase, developers want to remake FF6.

"I think FF6 Remake would be difficult," Kitase said in a roundtable interview on the Square Enix YouTube Channel (thanks, GamesRadar). "FF7 Remake is not yet finished so I am not able to think about it [...] But for FF6 there are many fans inside the company and they often ask me 'When are we making 6?'"

Not only is FF7 Rebirth unfinished, but it's being split into three parts. Once the next game arrives, we still have Revive to look forward to, and the team just launched a Crisis Core remaster for current-gen platforms. Insiders claim that FF9 is also being remade alongside a Tactics remaster, so it's likely that dreams of an FF6 remake won't come to fruition for a long while yet.

As for why FF6 would be difficult to remake, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi said that, because it's a pixel game, the team would have to change the story. He also added that the transition from pixel to CG would be very hard to pull off. However, despite these difficulties, he ended by asking Kitase, "Won't you release it a little sooner".

I wouldn't wait for a remake if you're itching to play FF6, because you'll probably end up sitting on your thumbs for a few years. Instead, you can pick up the pixel remaster. Square Enix just launched FF1 through FF6 for Nintendo Switch and PS4, but you can also pick up the bundle on PC. Each game can be purchased individually, too. The original FF6 launched way back in 1994, so it's a little dated, but there's a reason it's still so iconic.

In the meantime, FF16 launches in only two days, but copies are already out in the wild. If you want to avoid spoilers, it might be a good idea to start muting keywords.
