It was just a few short weeks after the release of Talk to Me, a possession film that, though different in many ways, owes a lot to Friedkin’s landmark horror. Later this year, David Gordon Green’s lega-sequel The Exorcist: Believer will do for Pazuzu’s possessions what Green’s recent Halloween trilogy did for John Carpenter’s iconic slasher. Possession stories have a long history in horror and they don’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

That was the era where horror games blossomed from their rudimentary concepts. Their mechanics, narrative design, and immersive qualities saw incredible improvement and would become the foundation for future horror titles.

Due to scheduling conflicts, Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are stepping into executive producer roles while Happy Death Day and Freaky director Christopher Landon takes the reins. New blood with a slasher history—and a decent one at that—is exciting enough, but Landon is also the first openly gay director to helm a Scream film.

Back in April, I wrote a piece touching on how it could be the scariest movie of the year. While I can’t confirm whether or not this is true since I obviously haven’t seen every horror movie coming out this year, I can say for sure that Talk To Me is the scariest film of the summer, and possibly one of the most frightening films I’ve ever seen.

<![CDATA[One Of 2023's Best Games Is Also Its Ugliest]]> Saying that one of 2023's best games is also its ugliest seems pretty straight-forward: I'm telling you there's a game that is a lot of fun but looks like garbage, right? That's not really what this is. The game, for all those Saved You A Click accounts salivating, is Bramble: The Mountain King, and by no technical measure is it the best. It runs awfully, and not in the frame rate/stability sense that we're supposed to care about these days. It runs badly in ways games used to in the good old days, like how when you jump for a platform you'll clip right through it, or you'll pass through a doorway and the level won't load. This game is made of bubblegum and sellotape. Also it's very ugly. I know I'm not selling it well. But Bramble: The Mountain King is one of the best games of 2023, and by 'best', maybe you should think of it as 'interesting'.

They bring a sense of nostalgia to the player of games played decades ago where pixel graphics were used due to the limitation of the hardware. <![CDATA[Scream 6's New Survivors Are The Perfect Replacement For The Original Trio]]> Scream is like no other slasher series and while that's down to its meta comedy and self-reflective writing, the glue holding it together is its legacy characters. So often, the final girl is just that—the final girl. They’re alone in their last struggle for survival as all of their friends have died, leaving them to fend off whatever masked killer is storming down the corridor solo. Halloween set the mould with Laurie Strode cowering as she expected Michael Myers to finally catch up with her, only for Dr Samuel Loomis to gun him down. Cops and doctors are the exceptions that prove the rule, but otherwise, if you’re friends with the lead, you don’t get to see the sequel. Until Scream. Sorry, Tatum.

<![CDATA[Dead Space Is Worth It Even If You’re A Massive Coward]]> I hate horror. Whether it’s a film, a game, or a book, I want no part of it. Creepy children, jumpscares, a slow, impending sense of dread. Ugh. It makes me shiver just imagining it. I can handle some films – The Shining is a classic, for instance, but perhaps only because I’ve now watched it so many times at the bequest of my partner that I know it inside and out. Saw, too. This may surprise you, but gore is fine. There’s nothing scary about Saw, it’s just gross. I was okay with Midsommar, and similar folk horror like The Wicker Man, but Hereditary is too much. I don’t even like The Woman in Black, mostly because it’s terrible, but also the fact it’s filled with unnecessary jumpscares. I even flinch at the jumpscares in The White Lotus! I sometimes feel like I’m a trampoline trapped in a man’s body, since I’m so bloody jumpy.

<![CDATA[The Most Intense Mechanics In Horror Games]]> A successful horror game lives or dies on its ability to scare players. Developers who dabble in the horror genre should ensure the elements that make a horror game, for example a spooky narrative, haunting monster design, or eerie soundscape, are all working towards the same goal: to make us soil our pants. However, since video games are an interactive medium, it’s the mechanics themselves that can prove most intense.

<![CDATA[Persona 3 Did The Backrooms 17 Years Ago]]> Creepypastas are an extension of our fascination with legends and myth—we love to spin horror stories that pass from person to person, growing as they’re told and re-told. The internet just gives people new ways to do it. Instead of cursed VHS tapes, we’re dishing out distorted pictures of dogs and smiling faces, asking others to share them, otherwise, they risk some kind of doom, and instead of ghost stories around the campfire, we’re documenting these tales on forums. My favourite of these modern digital-era myths is the Backrooms (which is getting its own A24 movie), and diving back into Persona 3, I can’t help but feel that the internet has simply taken an old fear we’ve always had and given it new life.

Probably because combining the confidence-boosting treasure-hunter bliss of RPGs with the ominous tension of horror is a difficult marriage to pull off. <![CDATA[Knock At The Cabin Review]]> As the hulking Leonard (Dave Bautista) emerges out of the woods to approach young Wen (Kristen Cui) while she catches grasshoppers on the forest floor, director M. Night Shyamalan keeps the camera tight on the scene’s two players. In these early shots, we see Bautista from grizzled jaw to furrowed brow, and Cui from wispy black hair to delicate chin. We're directed to notice the way the light shines off his glasses, and the small pink scar on her upper lip. For the next few minutes, as Leonard and Wen get to know each other, Shyamalan stays this close, cutting from screen-filling face to screen-filling face. It's an early and forceful statement of intent (especially on a huge theater screen). Though this story will be apocalyptic in scope, it will remain intimately focused on people.

<![CDATA[What Are The Shortest Horror Video Games?]]> A lot of video games take quite a bit of time to complete. There are games we can sink dozens of hours into and still not discover all the secrets or complete all the quests. And then, some games can get finished in a couple of hours. While some short games are fun for a little while, they leave little to talk about. Still, some tiny gems are worth checking out.

<![CDATA[Perish Review - A Roguelite Without Incentive]]> I spent four hours getting bludgeoned, shot, spat on, burned with lasers, and ripped apart limb from limb by angry hordes of hooded acolytes, only to reach a colosseum where a hybrid of Eldritch horror and Greek mythology stood ready to crush a moon like an egg just so he could conjure a sword. My flimsy little shotgun felt like a water pistol. Still, I persevered and buried him in bullets to the chorus of clapping husks, leaving him dead, despite shards of the scattered celestial body ripping into the atmosphere. But the second I left for the poisonous labyrinth with a tower made of death-beam-firing skulls, I knew I wasn’t long for this world.

<![CDATA[The Best Funny Horror Games]]> Horror and comedy are like chocolate and peanut butter. At first, the two might seem to not go together. In reality, the two elements form a great combination. The combination of comedy and horror can be subdivided into several types: parody, black comedy, and spoof. Black comedy makes jokes and funny situations in a morbid environment. Spoofs or parodies take humor from horror tropes.

If you’re keeping track, that’s 59 times its budget. Movie math tends to dictate that a film needs to make about twice its budget to turn a profit, so Skinamarink has been in the black since it hit the $30,000 mark, give or take.
