Games about zombies usually go from a purely head-bashing experience to a gut-wrenchingly painful experience, both figuratively and literally. Zombie game aficionados and lovers alike usually have a lot of good choices in PC and PlayStation consoles, but the Xbox Series X|S owners also got a fair share of options in their midst.
If you have Xbox Series X|S and don't have other consoles, you've come to the right article to satisfy your zombie game fix. Whether you're here for a fun and good time or a purely horrifying experience, the range of the undead games here is wide.
12 The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series
Who would've thought playing in a setting full of zombies could feel so emotional? Probably everybody who's played The Last of Us series, but also those who've invested a significant number of time playing through The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series.
This game is less about zombies and all about the well-written characters forced to make hard and painful decisions to survive a zombie-infested, apocalyptic world. It's not the newest zombie game in the Xbox Series X|S, but it's a cult classic that every zombie-franchise lover needs to play at least once.
11 World War Z
Good news for anyone that didn't get enough of the movie. Saber Interactive produced its own take on the film's setting with its own game in 2019. It's a must-play, especially if you're playing games mainly from the first-person shooter genre. World War Z doesn't disappoint in difficulty and pure zombie shooting fun.
Part of this game's strength is its variation in its settings and how a global zombie pandemic would look in different parts of the world. Not that it'd be great to see that happen in reality, but it makes for interesting gameplay at the confines of your Xbox.
10 Left 4 Dead 2
Left 4 Dead 2 is a classic zombie-chases-you game most likely gave you nightmares as a child. You no longer think about monsters existing just under your bed. Witches could be in a subway, on the streets, and even in broad daylight. Nothing but a bullet could stop these undead flesh-eaters, but even then, the hordes just feel endless.
The only positive to this experience is that you usually don't have to play alone, but that's until most of your teammates have been torn to shreds, leaving you to be the sole survivor of zombie suburbia.
9 Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
Everybody had a Call of Duty zombies phase, and you might've even memorized the maps of the Call of Duty zombie games by heart. But you would objectively have to agree that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 had the best zombies gameplay and lore.
Shadows of Evil featured interesting characters with glamorous lives laced with secretly scandalous pasts. Nobody could resist the noir '40s nightlife setting, even if it involves shooting up the undead to no end. The gameplay is also top-tier and is significantly better than the other zombie maps featured in previous Black Ops games.
8 Dying Light
Dying Light will really make you feel like you're at the world's end, especially when free roam is feasible for this game. Harran is mostly empty, save for a few armed people and many other zombies who could come charging at you with objects that could break your bones in real life.
You'll have fun ripping zombie heads off with the sheer force of your stomp or have the time of your life parkouring your way out of fights and through obstacles, all the while being a secret agent.
7 Dead Island 2
The past few games have been very serious, but for all its high-definition zombie head-bashing gruesomeness, Dead Island 2 is actually more comedic than it is scary. The best part about this game is its dedication to detail and physics, so you'll have the best time breaking the bones of a zombie in an upscale Beverly Hills home.
There are also different zombie types, and they can all be killed efficiently in varying ways. Exploring a California in shambles from a zombie apocalypse is just a fantasy you didn't think you'd need to experience until this game.
6 State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition
State of Decay 2 makes you imagine a world that's come to accept the existence of zombies. It's a world after the apocalypse, and the zombies are just part of the new normal for the folks in this game. Your job is to keep you and your small community alive and build a tiny piece of heaven in a world overrun by the undead.
Open-world and the survival strategy genre combined in this game offer every person a different gameplay experience and community depending on who they recruit and what choices they make.
5 Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse
Though released in 2005, Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse is a drastically different take on the zombie game genre. It follows a zombie you control named Stubbs, whose goal is to get vengeance by eating the brains of people in Punchbowl, Pennsylvania.
So instead of running from zombies, you'll be the one chasing people as a zombie and infecting them with your plague. Or you could just turn them into a good brainy snack, which is completely up to you. It's fun to play a villain since the opportunity rarely presents itself.
4 Amnesia: Rebirth
There is a mix of emotions to be had with Amnesia: Rebirth. Some think it's not as horrifying as its predecessor, but it's a game that unlocks a different type of fear within you. You will be journeying with Tasi Trianon in the middle of an Algerian desert full of undead and ghouls after waking up in an empty, bloody plane.
Harvesters are complicated beings, and while not exactly called zombies, they do have a similar effect. Arguably, they're worse than zombies. If you survive being chased by these awful creatures, you might actually have a bright future as a track-and-field star.
3 The Evil Within 2
Just how much survival horror involving zombies will you need? The genre can feel saturated, but The Evil Within 2 won't make you feel like it's just another zombie game. If you can't get enough of the subgenre of dad will kill anything for his child amidst an apocalypse, then this game is for you.
But even if you're just here for pure jump scare-induced fear, then The Evil Within 2 won't fail you at that. This game will never make you feel at ease due to its impeccable environment design as well as its great sound design.
2 Dead Space
The Dead Space 2023 remake might be your motivator to finally play this masterpiece. The environment has been optimized, which is perfect for anything sci-fi that's been released in 2008. But some do critic the remake since it makes the environment less menacing than it did before. Others believe the necromorphs have gotten scarier in the remake.
Not directly called zombies, you can consider necromorphs an advanced version of your typical brain eater. These creatures are corpses mutated due to extraterrestrial infection, who, in turn, also seek to mutate more bodies they come across to spread the virus. These creatures are probably the scariest zombies you'll ever have to fight since necromorphs crawl, run, and even fly.
1 Resident Evil 4 Remake
You were convinced to play Resident Evil 4 after all the mods involving Leon. Jokes aside, Resident Evil 4 is a cult classic with optimized graphics and better sound design. The plot takes place six years after the events of Raccoon City. As Leon, you'll be tasked to rescue Ashley Graham somewhere in a strange Spanish village where everything has gone wrong.
It's still beloved after all these years, and its remake reawakened many Resident Evil fans. If you've never touched any of the games in the series, Resident Evil 4 doesn't require you to play the others just so you can get the gist of the world being overrun by a mysterious virus because of a corporate mess-up.
